Thought I would talk today about the PowerEdgeR710 server. This is a 2U rack-mount system that can have one or two CPUs. Unlike older systems, the machine has two separate RAM banks, one for each CPU. If you only use one CPU, you only put RAM in the first bank, but if you're using two CPUs you have to put RAM in both banks. I'm not an engineer, so can't give you details, but this ought to make the system much faster than when using a single RAM bank, since the CPUs don't in each other's way when they're going for RAM. With just the one bank, it can be a little like going after the last dinner roll at Thanksgiving, which is never pretty. Oh, and with all those RAM banks, you can put a lot of RAM in this thing. There's a total of 18 slots to use if you have two CPUs, and you can put in up to a total of 288GB of RAM, which is especially spiffy if you're running a lot of virtual machines.
The R710 can take quad core or hexacore CPUs, so if you need power, you've got lots of options. If you don't need that much computing power, then there's the option to use lower wattage power supplies, which can reduce your energy costs.
Storage wise, there's options for different RAID controllers, depending on your needs. The lower end options will do the simplest RAID types, such as 0 and 1, while at the higher end you can get RAID 5, 6, 50, 60. There's also different data speeds supported, and different amounts of cache memory available. The R710 is available with either 2.5” or 3.5” hot swap drive bays.
We're happy to customize a machine to suit your needs. If you're not sure what the best combination will be for you, give us a call and we'll find the best solution for you.
